Shafer holds a Masters degree in Ethics, Peace and Global Affairs from American University. While working on her MA, she completed a semester abroad at the American University in Cairo where she studied international human rights and humanitarian law, as well as spent time traveling throughout Lebanon, Turkey and Greece. Following her semester in Cairo, Shafer wished to expand her focus on intercultural dialogue and communication in the Middle East, so she began working as a consultant for the Salam Institute for Peace and Justice. Prior to joining AAM, Shafer interned in the communication and policy departments for several other non-profits focused on international development and human rights, including InterAction, the National Network to End Domestic Violence and Polaris Project. She also graduated cum laude from Randolph-Macon College with a double major in Political Science and International Affairs and a minor in French.
