Arab affairs specialist Joseph Braude serves as AAM’s Strategic Advisor on programming and projects in the Middle East and North Africa. A fluent Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew speaker, he studied Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale and Arabic and Islamic Studies at Princeton. Over the past 20 years he has lived and worked in North Africa, the Levant, the Gulf states, and Iran.

Madeleine Brand is the primary host of America Abroad, an award-winning international affairs documentary program on public radio.  Brand joined KCRW in 2013 to host the midday show, Press Play. She most recently came from KCET, where she won an Emmy award for her work on the television news show, SoCal Connected. She’s best known for her career in public radio, where she created and hosted a daily show at KPCC. Before that, she was a reporter and host at NPR for more than 13 years.

Ilana Weinberg is the Managing Producer for International Programming at AAM. She oversees unique media projects in Afghanistan and Tunisia, and has produced dozens of talk shows, documentaries and public affairs programs for hosts and journalists across the Middle East and South Asia through AAM's Journalism Fellowship Program.

Rob Sachs is an award-winning journalist and the executive producer for America Abroad, AAM's monthly radio documentary series. He has worked in the national radio industry since 2000. He’s been a producer at NPR on programs such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Tell Me More. In 2006 he launched his own NPR podcast titled “What Would Rob Do?: An Irreverent Guide to Life’s Daily Indignities.” The audience for the podcast grew to over 15,000 listeners per episode and became the basis of a book published in 2010 by John Wiley and Sons.

Steve Martin began his association with America Abroad Media with the launch of the radio program America Abroad in 2003. Today, Martin and his company, SFM Consulting, handle station relations for America Abroad working to secure broadcast of the program on public radio stations throughout the U.S. In addition, Steve provides consulting on organizational issues as well as serving as the liaison to the program distributor Public Radio International.

Shafer holds a Masters degree in Ethics, Peace and Global Affairs from American University. While working on her MA, she completed a semester abroad at the American University in Cairo where she studied international human rights and humanitarian law, as well as spent time traveling throughout Lebanon, Turkey and Greece. Following her semester in Cairo, Shafer wished to expand her focus on intercultural dialogue and communication in the Middle East, so she began working as a consultant for the Salam Institute for Peace and Justice.
