The Next President: Transatlantic Relations and Beyond
International Town Meeting with AAM and Germany's ARD
AAM partnered with Germany's ARD to produce a televised transatlantic town meeting with Germany’s top foreign policy officials and U.S. experts, examining the impact of the US elections on transatlantic relations, the global economic crisis and other challenges facing a new U.S. president, from challenges in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East to the recent conflict in Georgia and its impact on relations with Russia.
The audience, comprised of diplomats, professors, academics, policy experts, students and others had the opportunity to engage in conversation with officials in Washington and Germany.
Guests included:
- Eckart von Klaeden, Member of the Bundestag, and foreign-affairs spokesman of the CDU/CSU faction in the German Parliament
- Cem Ozdemir, Member of the European Parliament, designated Chairman of Germany’s Green Party
- Dr. Charles Kupchan, Senior Fellow and Director of Europe Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a Professor of International Relations in the School of Foreign Service and Government Department at Georgetown University
- Dr. Karen Donfried, Executive Vice President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Dr. Donfried has also handled the Europe portfolio on the Policy Planning Staff in the Office of the Secretary of State
