Eliot Cohen

Eliot Cohen is Robert E. Osgood Professor of Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University. He also serves as Director of the Strategic Studies Program and the Philip Merill Center for Strategic Studies at SAIS. Previously, Cohen was assistant professor of government and assistant dean at Harvard University. He also taught in the Department of Strategy at the Naval War College.

An expert on Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Persian Gulf, Cohen directed the U.S. Air Force’s Gulf War Air Power Survey. He was appointed Counselor of the State Department by former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and he served on the policy planning staff of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He has been a member of the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee and was a founding member of the Project for the New American Century.

Cohen is author of Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen and Wartime Leadership (Free Press, 2002); co-editor of War Over Kosovo (Columbia University Press, 2002) and numerous other books and articles. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science and B.A. in Government from Harvard University.
